Bmw e46 story

Imagine the year 1999, the BMW Motorsport division had long crafted two of the finest race cars in history that will be remembered by all. The E30 and E36 M3 have both left countless magazines and hardcore enthusiasts raving for more.

17 Sep 2014, 13:13 UTC &middot By: Gabriel Nica / BMW went through some rather interesting ups and downs along the way and the M3 was part of its history since the late 1980s. This model too was affected by the various disputes happening inside Mun...

The different generations of the BMW M3 are some of the most iconic and popular performance-orientated automobiles in history. They are regarded as the benchmark that other competitors need to live up to. But what is the history of the BMW M3 and how did it all start?

While its name is different, the F82 M4 Coupe is still an M3 at heart and deserves to be part of the history of the car. Overall, it is mechanically identical to the four-door M3 with the only major difference being the number of doors. The M4 does feature a boot lid with an integrated spoiler, but apart from that not much else is different.

The story behind the M3 is a long one, but just like every story, it also has a beginning. To truly understand why the M brand is what it is today, we have to go all the way back to the first car to bear this badge.

Incidentally, Lamborghini were due to build the BMW M1, but with financial commitments elsewhere, they pulled out of the project. BMW M therefore built the M1, their first ever M car. The rest is history.

If you look up 'Legendary' in the dictionary, it really ought to say 'BMW M3'. This performance icon was born in the eighties and is undoubtedly one of the greatest names in performance car history. And it all started with this iconic, boxy, wide-arched German perfection known as the BMW E30 M3.Built so BMW could go and beat its German neighbours on the racetrack, just like the 3.0 CSL did back in the seventies, the E30 M3 was built for homologation purposes.

A controversial part of BMW M history, especially in the case of the super-saloon M5. With the previous 'E60' M5 featuring an incredible naturally-aspirated V10, the updated 'F10' M5 used a smaller 4.4-litre V8. What had happened? In search of more efficiency, manufacturers had to reduce engine sizes and adopt turbo power. In this case, the 'F10' was fitted with two of them, so M enthusiasts needn't have worried. Especially with 552bhp on tap - over fifty more than the V10.

This engine was amazing when the car came out, but M already knew they were pushing it. Since the 6-cylinder was becoming uncompetitive, BMW M came out with the V-8 for the GTR to race with (unrelated to the S65), and the rest is history. The S65 that replaced the S54 is lighter, more powerful, and better-sounding.

I was hosting a casual cocktail panel discussion with him and our friend Hannah Elliott from Bloomberg, and naturally my conversation with him immediately veered towards the origin story of the BMW Z8.

In this process of development the BMW M3 has served consistently as both a pioneer and pacemaker. Indeed, many of the innovations featured for the first time in the BMW M3 now help to improve driving dynamics and motoring comfort also in regular production cars. And so the history of the BMW M3 is full of milestones and benchmarks in technology. 041b061a72
