A tangy twist on white wine: Proxies Blanc Slate ($150 for six 750-mL bottles at the time of publication)Alcohol level: less than 0.5%Type: wine alternative

The closest thing to red wine: Thomson & Scott Noughty Dealcoholized Rouge ($25 for a 750-mL bottle at the time of publication)Alcohol level: less than 0.5%Type: dealcoholized wine

Why we like it: Nonalcoholic reds are especially tricky to get right. Our panel found this to be true after tasting several dealcoholized reds and red wine alternatives, but we agreed that the Thomson & Scott Noughty Dealcoholized Rouge came the closest in flavor. This one looks and smells like a red, too, with a deep burgundy color in the glass and a fruity, vanilla aroma.

For both sessions, we tasted the bottles in four rounds: sparkling rosé and still rosé, sparkling white and still white, and sparkling red and still red. Not all of the wines we tried fit perfectly into these categories, but we did our best to group them appropriately. In each round, we started with the wine alternatives, which tended to have less familiar, more unconventional flavors, and we ended with the grape-based dealcoholized wines. Using a tasting rubric that we created with input from Jillian Barkley of Soft Spirits, we evaluated each drink with the following qualities in mind:

When tasting, we looked for balanced NA wines that offered complex and compelling flavors. We tasted each drink alone and then with food, and between rounds we cleansed our palates with water and crackers. For the dealcoholized wines, we took into account how they compared to the wines they were derived from. For wine alternatives, we looked for an interesting beverage that was analogous to wine in its nuances and sensations, as opposed to a replica of it.

It all has to do with the non-alcoholic winemaking process, which requires an extra step. After going through the traditional fermentation process, Laborde says the alcohol in the wine is evaporated using a special filtration process.

"This is definitely not a fad," says Dan Mettyear, who works with the consultancy group IWSR Drinks Market Analysis. According to Mettyear, non-alcoholic wine consumption across the global market has grown by 24% in the last year alone.

There are even vineyards dedicated entirely to producing non-alcoholic wine. One of them is Le Petit Béret, a small French brand headquartered in Béziers, in southern France's Occitanie region, that makes low-sugar, non-fermented white, red and rosé wine and sparkling wines.

"Particularly in kind of like traditional wine markets, it's a bit of a harder sell," he says. "A lot of people have already well-established ideas about what wine is and what wine should taste like."

From the Le Naturel wine family comes a non-alcoholic wine for any alternative beverage seeker. These wines are dealcoholized delicately, to maintain the aromas, flavors and textures of the wines. Featuring a Grenache and Grenache Blanc from Spain, both bottles are single varietal and organic for clean drinking.

From Ransom Distillery in Sheridan comes a new line of Oregon-made non-alcoholic craft spirits. Driven by the vision to give consumers freedom to drink on their own terms, the team used their experience in craft spirits to distill non-alcoholic options while still delivering the aromas, flavors and mixability of the classics. Each zero-proof spirit is made by mixing flavorful botanicals & ingredients without ever introducing alcohol. Dhos is low in calorie and sugar-free.

Traditionally, non-alcoholic beers are created by macro breweries by removing the alcohol from a regular beer. There are several ways to do this; the most common is to boil the alcohol off or filter it out. Both of these methods diminish the aromatics and flavor of the beer. After giving up alcohol before his wedding, Shufelt became all too aware of the lack of quality non-alcoholic options available. He eventually partnered up with experienced brewer John Walker and together, the vision for Athletic Brewing was born. After hundreds and hundreds of trial brews on their homebrew system, they finally developed a new way to produce high quality, fully fermented and conditioned craft non-alcoholic beers.

First, you tend to receive excellent customer service from the brand, as they can retain total control over your order from beginning to end. Second, in the case of emerging brands, you know that every dollar you spend in their store is going directly towards helping them grow their business, and in turn, grow the entire non-alcoholic space (which is a win for all of us, if you think about it!)

Another e-commerce store dedicated exclusively to non-alcoholic beer, wine, and spirits, No & Low offers a wonderfully curated collection of non-alcoholic wine for sale, including Thomson & Scott Noughty Organic Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Chardonnay and NON Wine Alts.

With over 200 stores across 24 states, Total Wine & More is one of the best liquor chains to find non-alcoholic beer, wine and spirits. As many loyal NA drinkers know, the buyers at Total Wine were very early adopters and supporters of the alcohol-free space, going out of their way to stock a large variety of both domestic and imported non-alcoholic wine for sale.

If you live out west, BevMo! is a great option to shop for non-alcoholic wine. With over 150 stores across California, Arizona, and Washington, this large retail liquor chain has taken big strides towards supporting the non-alcoholic space with a growing list of options available to purchase in their stores.

One of the most highly-recommended places to buy non-alcoholic wine in Canada is Well, an online Canadian wellness store. While the site carries all sorts of wellness products, they also carry a wide variety of non-alcoholic beer, wine, and spirits, including the full lineup of St. Regis Non-Alcoholic Wines, which as you may know from our review, is one of our favorites!

Alcohol in traditional wines helps carry the aromas & flavours to our palate as well as add texture and body, so expect a different drinking experience with de-alcoholised wines. It will take some getting used to... The upside is they are around 75% lower in kilojoules/calories, so they help reach or keep a healthy weight whilst avoiding the side effects of alcohol.

We also stock premium alcohol-free grape juices. These tend to be sweeter than de-alcoholised wines as they have not been through the fermentation process which turns natural sugars into alcohol (prior to the alcohol being removed), however, they are packed with the flavour & goodness naturally found in grapes.

The Food Standards Code states that 'Low Alcohol Wine' refers to wine that contains less than 1.15% ABV. The Food Standards Code expressly restricts claims related to low alcohol to this defined limit. At Sans Drinks all of our wines contain 0.5% or less ABV.

When comparing the taste of non-alcoholic wine with alcoholic wine, many are very close in smell, flavour and mouthfeel. Some of the wines that taste just like their alcoholic versions, according to Sans Drinks customers, include the the Giesen 0% Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, 1920 Pinot Grigio and Thomson & Scott Noughty. In 2022 Body & Soul compared the Next Destination Barossa Valley Shiraz to the Penfolds Bin 389 and was pleasantly surprised.

Non-alcoholic wine is so much more than just grape juice. Because it goes through the same process as regular wine before the alcohol is removed, it still retains much of that wine taste we know and love. There are also many questions around why zero-alcohol wines are not cheaper, and we have answered this popular question in this blog: Why Zero Alcohol Drinks Aren't Cheap Like Lemonade

There is not a lot of information charting the history of non-alcoholic wine. However, we do know that one of the earliest de-alcoholisation processes came from Carl Jung, in Germany, and dates back to 1908. Carl Jung patented his process and the famous winery not only makes their own range of non-alcoholic wine, they also remove the alcohol for many other brands. In Australia, Edenvale, who started making alcohol free wine in 2006, was the first brand to exclusively make non-alcoholic wine. Since then the market has exploded with many mainstream wine brands such as Wolf Blass, Jacobs Creek, Giesen, Tempus Two and Brown Brothers all producing a non alcoholic wine range.

The best non-alcoholic wine is the one that suits your taste preference. If your favourite wine is Champagne you will love the Thomson & Scott Noughty this alcohol-free sparkling wine is organic, B Corp Certified and vegan friendly. If your favourite wine is a Pinot Grigio, then you will love the 1920 Wines Pinot Grigio or, if you enjoy a big Barossa Shiraz you'll love the Barossa Valley Shiraz from Next Destination Wines.
