The most popular mattress size on the market is the queen mattress, which is traditionally used in a master bedroom. At 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, the queen offers plenty of space for couples or individuals who like having extra room to move around in bed.

At 76 inches wide and 80 inches long, the king mattress is large enough to accommodate couples who share the bed with their children or a sizable pet (think: a Great Dane). A king bed can be made of two twin beds pushed together, which is referred to as a split king. King beds are large enough that both sleepers can sprawl out with room to spare.

The longest mattress on the market, the California king mattress is a whopping 72 inches wide and 84 inches long. Its generous length makes it ideal for taller individuals, especially people more than six feet tall. Of course, people of average height might also benefit from a California king depending on how many people and pets are sharing the bed

Will you be sharing the bed with a partner? Do your children or dogs typically sleep with you? These are questions to ask yourself before deciding on mattress size. Typically twin, twin XL, and full mattresses are meant for one person. The queen, king, and California king beds are big enough for two sleepers.

The amount of money you are willing to spend on a mattress can also help you choose the right size. A king will cost more than a queen, and a queen more than a full, etc. Buying a mattress that meets both your size needs and your financial needs is key.

A twin, also known as a single mattress, is the smallest size available on the market today. Casper twin mattresses are 38 inches by 75 inches and are the perfect size for a child or short single sleeper. Single sleepers that need a longer bed can try a twin XL, which is 80 inches long.

The dimensions for a Casper double size mattress and a full mattress are 53 inches by 75 inches. In this case, both names represent the same kind of mattress. This bed is on the smaller side, but still able to fit two people if needed.

The full-sized bed (also known as a double) can fit two people. In fact, full mattresses were the most common size used by couples in the 1960s. They are advantageous because they are able to fit into smaller rooms. However, many adults these days prefer a larger bed.

To determine the dimensions of a mattress, measure it from head to foot for the length and from side to side for the width. It may be helpful to measure the depth of the mattress as well, from the bottom where it rests on the box spring to the top.

Now that you know all about the sizes and dimensions of different beds, you should be able to make an informed decision regarding your next mattress. Once you have your sizing figured out, consider an adjustable bed frame for the ultimate comfort or some soft, breathable bedding to outfit your new investment!

The CB2 was the simplest bed frame to assemble. With only eight main components, it had fewer parts to keep track of than other, more complicated beds we tested. It took only about 40 minutes to piece together the frame, but the CB2 was also the heaviest bed we assembled (so consider skipping arm day at the gym post-assembly). Still, one tester was able to move each piece into place without expending too much sweat.

The CB2 frame required only eight bolts to piece it together (it came with a hex wrench to help) and an additional 16 bolts to secure the slats onto the frame and the center beam. Fourteen 2-inch-wide, -inch-thick pine slats are attached to canvas strips; they unfurled like a rope ladder, so they were a little easier to manage than the many individual pieces on some other beds. And of the three beds we recommend, the CB2 had the least space (2 inches) between the slats, which gives it a very sturdy build.

Zinus obviously engineered this frame with easy assembly in mind. Although it has more parts to piece together than other models we tested, the Moiz also includes the most straightforward, step-by-step instructions of any bed we recommend, a rarity with most DIY furniture. There are also identifying stickers affixed to each of the major parts. Unpacking and assembling the Moiz took us 40 minutes, about the same amount of time the CB2 model took, and we were pleasantly surprised by several small details not always found at this price: individually sealed packaging for hardware, the inclusion of extra parts, a ratchet wrench, and pre-drilled parts.

Twin XL mattresses are slightly longer than traditional twin beds. Both twin and twin XL beds are 38 inches in width and designed for a single sleeper, but the twin XL mattress size is 80 inches in length as opposed to the 75-inch-long twin. The additional 5 inches in length of a twin XL make this bed better suited for tall children, teenagers, and college students.

If you are 6 feet or taller, a twin XL will fit you better than a normal twin bed. You are most likely to find twin XLs at universities as the standard-size mattress within a dorm room. This bed size is the most common in college residence halls because it better meets the needs of young single adults than a twin mattress for only a slightly higher price.

A full bed is as long as a twin (75 inches) but much wider (54 inches), and can fit an average-size adult. You can find every type of full-size mattress on the market, like an innerspring from Saatva, or a hybrid from WinkBeds.

Next, consider how many people will be sleeping in the bed. While a full-size bed is enough for one person, a queen-size bed is better if you sleep with a partner. If you and your partner also share the bed with children or pets, perhaps consider sizing up to a king- or California king-size mattress.

Finally, if you or anyone you share the bed with tosses and turns a lot at night, you may need a mattress with at least one layer of memory foam. Memory foam helps with motion isolation, which is how much movement you feel when someone else in the bed moves around or gets in and out of the bed.

The dimensions of a king bed are typically 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. A king mattress is typically the most expensive mattress size as it is one of the largest sizes offered by many companies.

If you and your partner prefer different firmness or incline levels, a split king mattress is a good option. A split king is essentially two twin mattresses side-by-side so you can choose different firmness levels for each side. An adjustable bed frame for a split king can also adjust the incline of each side of the mattress separately.

California king mattresses are 84 inches long, which is 4 inches longer than a standard king mattress at 80 inches. At 72 inches wide, a California king is 4 inches narrower than a standard king, which measures 76 inches wide.

Similar to twin XL and California king mattresses, there are a variety of custom beds that are variations of standard mattress sizes. One thing to keep in mind is that with custom mattresses you may have more difficulty finding sheets, bedding, and frames that fit.

The Olympic queen mattress is the same length as a standard queen but 6 inches wider. The additional 6 inches of width gives you and your partner additional space to stretch out without taking up as much space in your room as a king-size bed.

Alternatively, a California queen is longer than a standard queen mattress but the same width. At 84 inches long, the California queen mattress is the same length as the California king and is a good choice for people that are 6 feet or taller. You may want a California queen if you or your partner are tall and your room is better suited for the standard width of a queen-size bed.

There are also several nonstandard king-size mattress variations. The Wyoming king bed is 84 inches by 84 inches, giving you a longer and wider mattress than your standard king. The Texas king is 80 inches wide by 98 inches long, making it perfect for larger sleepers that like to really stretch out. The largest is the Alaskan king bed which is 108 inches by 108 inches. The Alaskan king is designed for large master bedrooms and gives you plenty of space to share with a partner, children, and pets.

On the smaller end of the spectrum is the crib mattress. The crib mattress is designed to fit a standard crib at 52 inches long and 28 inches wide. The size of a crib mattress is important in keeping your baby safe while sleeping. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that a crib should not have a gap larger than two fingers between the mattress and crib walls. Crib beds are small enough that they can easily follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines to keep your newborn in the same room as you for at least the first six months to keep an eye on your baby at night. A crib mattress will provide your child with a good sleep surface until they are ready to move up to a larger twin bed.

The most popular mattress size is a queen mattress. It provides the necessary space for a couple to sleep together while taking up less floor space than larger mattresses. Queen-size mattresses are affordable and widely available due to their popularity. To find the right mattress for you, check out our rating of the Best Mattresses of 2023.

A twin XL bed is 5 inches longer than a standard twin size. Also known as a twin extra long, the twin XL size is popular with taller children, college students, and single adults as it elongates the sleep surface without taking up too much space in the bedroom. 041b061a72
